For Whom the Bell Tolls
The Shivering Sea
The Shivering Sea is the setting for the Black Crusade campaign, Gods and Masters.
The Shivering Sea is a warp anomaly located on the westernmost fringes of the Imperium, in the Birthright Marches sub-sector of the Vortigern Sector. The anomaly also stretches beyond the light of the Astronomicon and into Tormented Space.
Not much is known about the Shivering Sea, although its existence stretches back to the beginnings of Imperial records.
What is known is that the anomaly differs from the majority of warp storms. While other warp disturbances could be likened to a turbulent sea or a raging river, the Shivering Sea is like a frozen lake – while it is possible to enter, exit is almost impossible.
Billions of souls have been lost after plunging into the Shivering Sea – including Adeptus Mechanicus Explorator fleets, Space Marine crusades, Imperial Guard campaigns, hapless travelers, and countless thieves, murderers and pirates who’ve sought to live far from the light of the Emperor.
Within the Shivering Sea there are some who still cling to the Imperial Creed, but many who reside within have abandoned the Emperor and embraced their baser nature or slipped into the worship of the Chaos Gods.
The Shivering Sea is large enough to encompass several star systems, although it’s not known exactly how “deep” the anomaly goes – many warp storms are “bigger on the inside” and although the Shivering Sea is different from most warp storms, the similarities outweigh the differences.
Although it is primarily located in the Vortigern Sector, the Shivering Sea also stretches out beyond the light of the Astronomicon and into the region known as Tormented Space.
